Operation Mincemeat - Theatre Trip
BackA group of 33 Year 10 pupils had an amazing experience in London learning about Operation Mincemeat. In 1943, a plan was devised by the British intelligence services to use a corpse dressed in military uniform and holding secret documents to trick the Nazis into moving their army away from the planned invasion target of Sicily.
Before visiting the West End in the afternoon to see Operation Mincemeat: A New Musical at the Fortune Theatre, pupils first had a chance to visit the Imperial War Museum to learn about the history of the plan and about how the actors portray this on stage.
Pupils enjoyed a guided tour of the Spies, Lies and Deception exhibition, followed by a workshop exploring character development in the show and how the musical was written with only five actors playing many more different characters. For the afternoon, pupils headed over to the Fortune Theatre to settle in for the matinee performance of the five-star Operation Mincemeat: A New Musical.
Pupils were amazed by how such a topic could be portrayed as a musical and thoroughly enjoyed the performance. Pupils even got a chance to meet two of the actors, Natasha Hodgson and Christian Andrews, at the stage door for photos and to get their programmes signed.
