This Holocaust Memorial Day marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp complex. Cromer Academy marked the occasion with a series of events throughout the day.

At the start of the day, pupils and staff were read the following message, led by Mr Knowles, Head of History.

“Today is Holocaust Memorial Day, the Holocaust, which occurred between 1941 and 1945, saw over six million Jews, alongside millions of others including Romani people, disabled individuals, Poles, Soviet prisoners of war, and countless others, being systematically persecuted and murdered by the Nazi regime.

The Holocaust reminds us of how fragile civilization is, and the ease with which fear and division can lead to unimaginable atrocities (murders). It is a testament to what happens when democracy fails, when propaganda and lies reign, and when individuals choose to stand by rather than act. By remembering, we commit to upholding the values of mutual respect, equality, and tolerance.”

A series of slides were displayed on screens around the school throughout the day, sharing facts and life stories linked to the Holocaust.

Pupils in History enrichment class learnt about Holocaust Memorial Day and looked at Holocaust memorial gardens and statues around the world. The class were then tasked with designing their own statues to commemorate the occasion. (pictures below)

Representatives from each year group of our Student Council planted a rose bush and erected a plaque in our school garden as a mark of respect to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day 2025.  (pictures below)

We hope that commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day 2025 is an opportunity for pupils and staff at Cromer Academy to come together, learn both from and about the past and take action to make a better future for all.
